In classical forms of architecture, parapets served both decorative purposes and provided the defense function of diverting projectiles. Parapets in modern buildings are often simply vertical extensions of the exterior wall.  They capture the edge of a flat roofing system.  Also, they provide the appearance of a flat roof from below, regardless of the slight slope of the roof surface.  If constructed from fire resistant material, parapet walls can provide protection from the spread of fire from one building to the next.  This sketch depicts a masonry parapet and a few typical components used to complete the assembly.
