CMU Top of Partition Detailing

When designing with CMU wall assemblies, lateral restraint is required at the top of full height partitions.  This anchorage can be provided a few different ways.  The unique conditions of each project can raise questions as to what is the most appropriate detail.  CMU top of partition details should consider the following criteria.

Sufficient lateral restraint:  The anchor should provide adequate lateral restraint.  These details should be engineered, with the required spacing of anchors clearly identified.  For example, in the details below, anchors at 4’-0” on center would be common.

Vertical deflection:  Non-load bearing CMU partitions that frame to an overhead structural floor should allow the floor above to deflect overtime.  Failure to allow for vertical movement could induce buckling on the wall.  CMU top of partition details aim to restrain the wall laterally, while allowing for potential vertical movement.

Main reinforcement: How does the anchor relate to typical horizontal and vertical reinforcement used in the lower portion of the wall?  How are loads transferred between top anchor and other reinforcement?

Constructability: How does the anchor allow for block installation?  On any CMU wall spanning floor to floor, how can the top block physically be installed?

Fire rating:  CMU walls are often used at locations requiring fire ratings.  How will the anchorage system allow for a tested and approved firestopping system.

Here are a few sample sketches of different anchors used in flat concrete slab construction.  On corrugated metal decks, additional detail is required to seal the partition against the corrugations.
